Why Activities Matter At Caraway Assisted Living

At Caraway Assisted Living, we believe that meaningful activity is essential to healthy aging—and it’s what truly sets us apart. Our vibrant calendar of daily programs is designed not just for fun, but to improve quality of life in measurable, research-supported ways.

As we age, fine motor skills and hand strength naturally decline, impacting everything from eating to dressing. Structured activities like puzzle assembly, cutting, handwriting, and sorting small items can significantly improve grip strength, finger dexterity, and coordination (Neistadt, 1994; Franciotta et al., 2019).

But the benefits of activity go far beyond the physical.

Engaging the brain through games, learning, conversation, and creative expression helps reduce the risk of memory loss by 30–50%, especially when paired with physical and spiritual practices (Meilianingsih & Husni, 2019). At Caraway, you’ll find a range of programs that stimulate the mind—from trivia nights and art classes to storytelling circles and lifelong learning workshops.

Connection Is Also Key

Studies show that 88% of older adults feel better overall—rating their health as good or excellent—when they experience daily positive interactions (Howley, 2019). In contrast, loneliness has been linked to health risks equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes a day. That’s why our community fosters meaningful social connections through group activities, themed events, and shared meals.

Even gentle physical movement – like walking clubs or chair yoga—has been shown to improve deep sleep and memory (Naylor et al., 2000), while supervised exercise programs reduce depression and agitation in those with cognitive decline (Aman & Thomas, 2009).

Sensory-based activities also play a role, helping lower anxiety and agitation (Kong, Evans & Guevara, 2009), and reminiscing programs can reduce anxiety by reconnecting residents to meaningful life experiences (Scates et al., 1986).

Whether it’s painting, sculpting, or solving puzzles and card games, our residents aren’t just staying active—they’re building stronger minds, healthier bodies, and happier lives (Companions for Seniors, 2020).

At Caraway, activity isn’t just part of the day. It’s part of who we are.
